What Timber Should I Choose?
Different timbers suit different applications and budgets.
Here’s a straightforward guide:
Blackbutt
One of the most popular choices for staircases in Sydney. Hard, durable, attractive grain and takes a stain or clear coat beautifully. Works well in both contemporary and traditional homes.
Spotted Gum
Slightly harder than Blackbutt with a distinctive fiddleback grain. A strong visual statement for anyone who wants the staircase to be a feature.
Merbau
Deep reddish-brown colour that weathers to a silver-grey if left uncoated, or holds its warm tone beautifully with regular oiling. One of the tougher hardwoods available.
Treated Pine
More affordable and perfectly suitable for external or utility staircases where appearance is less critical. Resistant to rot and insects when properly sealed.
